Reverend James Cameron Gill came to Walton in July 1984. He had previously served the Bruce Mines Desbarats Pastoral Charge near Sault Ste. Marie and Islington United Church in Toronto, Ont.
Under his leadership during the past 21 years, Walton has experienced continual growth in membership, church facilities, church activities and community involvement. Only 60 of the present 500 families were members in 1984.
Jim has overseen four major renovations and expansions during his tenure, as the church has worked to meet the needs of the expanding membership. Jim is Walton's longest serving pastor. He was instrumental in instituting a Student Minister Internship program which became the longest- running congregational program in the denomination. His ability to reach out to people, his energy and organizational skills continue to be a blessing to the congregation and community. His dedicated service to his congregation and his tireless ministry to reach those without a church home will surely provide continued growth and well-being of the church.
Our music director and organist (since 1981) has been Linda Fletcher, an internationally recognized voice teacher, a teacher of piano, a noted Canadian composer, recognized internationally, of both religious and secular music. She also plays French horn and guitar. Apart from the two Sunday worship services, she also directs many concerts and music presentations. Walton has a vibrant music program of over 80 singers in three choirs. Linda also has a thriving private studio. Her students and choirs have won many local and provincial and international awards for piano, singing and composition.
Linda’s compositions focus on secular and sacred choral works. Her choral compositions are published by Leslie Music Supply; the first, A Song of Sharing, became their best selling song with international sales of over 10,000 copies and gained more popularity by being selected for music festival lists. Another, Linda’s setting of The Olde Irish Blessing was performed in Rome for World Youth Day before an audience of 3,000.
Alongside director Tom Oliver, Linda is co-writer and arranger for Voices in the Night- a non-profit fundraising vehicle created by Linda and Mr. Oliver in 1996, which continues to travel throughout Southern Ontario. Linda acted as chorus director for two Juno nominated recordings of children’s entertainer, Eric Nagler and featuring Walton family chorus.
Linda is a member of ACTRA, NATS and ORMTA where she served on the executive for ten years. In 2006 she was the recipient of the Pauline McGibbon Lifetime Achievement in the Arts Award. Also, in 2006 Linda celebrated her 25th anniversary at Walton. She continues to reside in Oakville with her husband John and their children Paul, Jennifer, Mark and Scott.
